What people use it for

How much do tags matter?

YouTube's own guidance is that tags play a minimal role in how videos are discovered. Your title, thumbnail, description and the video itself matter far more. Tags are mostly useful for common misspellings of your topic or brand, and for words that do not fit naturally in the title.

So use this tool to save a few minutes, not to chase rankings. A short list of accurate tags beats a long list of loosely related ones.

Hashtags

Hashtags in your title or description are clickable. YouTube typically shows the first three above the video title. Keep them few and relevant. YouTube's help pages advise against stuffing a video with hashtags, and using too many can cause them to be ignored.

What tags can and cannot do

YouTube has said that tags play a minimal role in helping people find a video. The title, thumbnail and description matter far more, along with how viewers react. Tags are most useful for words that are commonly misspelled and for terms that do not fit naturally in the title. Using them as a ranking trick does not work, and tags that do not describe your video can break YouTube's rules on misleading metadata.

The 500 character limit

All your tags together can use about 500 characters. Multi-word tags are wrapped in quotation marks, which uses two extra characters each, and commas between tags count too. The counter follows that and warns when you go over. The tool also leaves a little spare room when it picks the starting selection.

Using hashtags well

Hashtags typed in the title or description become clickable, and YouTube typically shows the first few above the title. Use two or three that truly fit. Piling on many hashtags looks spammy and can cause them to be ignored.
